How Your Car Air Conditioner Works:
At the heart of the AC system is the air conditioning compressor and of course the Freon that flows through it. Freon is pumped throughout the AC system, either the older type R12 which can cost allot these days, or the new green friendly (environmentally friendly) R134A Freon. Freon is a mixture of gas and liquid that is circulated and compressed inside the air conditioning system. The compressor is powered by a drive belt from the engine, and has an electrically operated engagement clutch that turns the refrigeration on or off. The compressor outputs highly pressurized hot gas.
NEXT IS THE CONDENSER. Located in front of the radiator, and similar looking, is the condenser. The job of the car’s air conditioning condenser is to cool the hot gas, using the air flow from the engine fan, these hot gases are cooled and turned into liquid. The condenser takes the High pressure gas output from the compressor, and converts it into warm liquid.
EXPANSION VALVE SYSTEM. The liquid that leaves the condenser is sent through a small tube to a receiver/drier. This is where moisture is removed. The output is the same pressure and temperature as when it entered, but with moisture removed.
EXPANSION DEVICE. Although the expansion process may vary from vehicle to vehicle, the expansion allows the system to reduce the pressure on the liquid. This reduction in pressure also facilitates a reduction in temperature. The output from the expansion device is Cold liquid, which leaves us full cycle through the air conditioning system.
When it comes to working on your car’s Heating and cooling system, including repairs, replacements, AC recharge, etc… having the right tools and equipment can make the job go smoothly, and even reduce costs.
